Wanumetonomy Wins Inaugural Award

PROVIDENCE – Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club has won the inaugural Distinguished Club Award, presented by the RIGA. 

The award is given in recognition of “Exceptional Dedication and Commitment to the RIGA.” Wanumetonomy has gone above and beyond the past two seasons to support golf in the Ocean State. It hosted both the State Amateur and Women’s Amateur championships in 2022, along with the Women’s Four-Ball Championship in 2022 and 2023. It also hosted the Endicott Cup, and a RIGA Weekly Invitational in 2023. 

Wanumetonomy G&CC, along with Newport Country Club, normally hosts the annual John P. Burke Memorial Tournament. 

“Wanumetonomy is a perfect example of what being a member club is and giving back to the golf community in this state,” said RIGA Executive Director Bob Ward. “The board and the members of Wanumetonomy understand the importance of supporting the golf association and amateur golf in Rhode Island.”

Wanumetonomy will host both the Women’s Four-Ball and Men’s Senior Four-Ball championships in 2024. 

“We are honored that Wanumetonomy is the first recipient of the Distinguished Club of the Year Award. The RIGA has done much to promote golf in Rhode Island, while running an active tournament schedule for players of all levels. Wanumetonomy is pleased to have supported this effort thanks to the club’s Board of Governors, head professional Bill Maguire, superintendent Shaun Marcellus and our membership.”
