Robert Mulligan

You had to figure a guy named Mulligan wasn’t going to make cliff diving his sport of choice - you make a mistake in cliff diving, you don’t get a second chance. But if a Mulligan can be described as “a little extra help”, then Bob Mulligan got the perfect name. Because helping out is what Bob Mulligan has been all about for most of his life. Especially when it comes to golf.

For 48 years, he was the starter and a Rules Official for the Rhode Island Juniors. For 27 years, he did the same for the Northeast Amateur. Over the past quarter century, he has been a starter and rules official at a number of RIGA majors including the State Amateur, the Open, and the Four-Ball.

One of the founders of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, he introduced the Rhode Island Interclub Championship that now bears his name. He was co-founder of the State Father/Son Championship, president of his home club, Pawtucket CC, president of the RIGA and president of the John P. Burke Memorial Scholarship.

His influence, expertise and largesse have gone beyond the Ocean State. For over 20 years he has been a rules official at the New England Juniors and at the USGA Junior Championship Sectional qualifying. He served for 12 years in the same capacity at the New England Amateur and at the USGA Junior Amateur Championship.

At different times he has been a rules official at Sectional qualifying and National USGA events including the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Amateur, U.S. Senior Open and the U.S. Senior Amateur. He has served as the president of the New England Golf Association and on the USGA Junior Championship Committee.
