EAST PROVIDENCE _ The home team swept all the honors Thursday in the annual Robert Mulligan Interclub Championship at Metacomet. Metacomet won both the team competition, with a four-man total of 293, and had the individual champion in Ricky Audette Jr., who recorded a 67, the only player in the field to finish under par. The event is held each year in honor of the former RIGA president and Hall of Famer, Robert Mulligan, who spent nearly a half century assisting in RIGA events. Metacomet’s team was so strong that four-time State Amateur champion Brad Valois had an off day, with a 78, only fourth best for the team. But in addition to Audette, Jamie Lukowicz tied for second with a 71, George Cidale posted a 77 and Valois his 78. Metacomet beat second-place Kirkbrae by six strokes, so it would have won even it had to use the score of its fifth man, Steve Merluzzo, who had an 81. John Auclair of Kirkbrae tied Lukowicz for second with a 71. The third place team was a surprise. That was Quinnatisset, one of the newest members of the RIGA. It joined this year along with two other clubs near the Rhode Island border. Quinnatisset’s team shot 301 with Dale Smith and Jim Colucci leading the way with 74s. Kevin Marcoux added a 75, E.J. Wholey 78 and Rocky Bedard 79. Defending champion Pawtucket finished seventh at 309.
