WARWICK _ They had to go to their fifth man, but it was worth the extra work for Crestwood on Thursday as it scored an upset victory the RIGA’s annual Robert Mulligan Interclub Championship at Valley. Crestwood tied with the defending champion Metacomet team with a four-man total of 301. In such situations, the rules dictate that the score of the fifth player on each team determines the champion. Steve Sampson, a former RIGA president, had an 82 for Crestwood while George Cidale had an 84 for Metacomet. Each club is represented by five players, with the top four determining the team total. For Crestwood, Jon Costa had a 74, Kolby Simmons and Mike Douilette each had 75 and Douglas Greenslade 77 for the 301 total. Metacomet got a 71 from Brad Valois, 74 from Dave Nuttall Jr., 76 from Jeff Maher and 80 from Michael Pirri. Crestwood had won the event only once before, in 1979. Potowomut was third at 307, led by Dan Najarian. Najarian won the Ronnie Quinn Award given to the low scorer, with a 70, beating out two former State Champions, Valois and Charlie Blanchard, who had 71s. Twenty-four teams took part.
